Youth organisation: PINK!

PINK! is the Party for the Animal’s youth organisation. Its most important goal is to raise awareness of animal welfare among young people. There is sometimes confusion about the name PINK! Aside from being the Dutch world for our little finger and the English word for a colour, a pink is a one-year old calf. Since the Party for the Animal’s logo features a cow, it was logical for our youth organisation to choose the name PINK!

Just like the Party for the Animals, PINK! is an association. A congress is held twice a year for the association’s members. The members of this congress elect the executive committee, determine the budget and approve the annual financial reports.

PINK!’s executive committee tries to involve young people in animal welfare issues in a number of ways. For example, by organising excursions to (organic) farms, visiting animal laboratories, or by organising light-hearted and mediagenic demonstrations. For example, during the Christmas period in 2007, PINK! organised protests against the well-known Dutch supermarket chain Albert Heijn. This retailer had removed a number of vegetarian products from its shelves to make room for game and other meat products. PINK! organised a successful e-mail protest (within six days around 8000 young people had sent an e-mail to the supermarket chain!), and gave out free vegetarian hotdogs in front of a Albert Heijn supermarket to draw attention to the benefits of a vegetarian diet.

Membership of PINK! costs 5 euros a year. Young people between the ages of 14 and 27 years old, who have Dutch nationality or live in the Netherlands, can become members. PINK! is officially recognised by the Party for the Animals as its youth organisation. Given this status, PINK! receives a grant from the Ministry of the Interior via the Party for the Animals.
