We have had another wonderful party congress! At this congress, the list of candidates for the municipal elections in the Dutch municipality of Groningen was established. Niko Koffeman, senator and founder of the Party for the Animals, discussed the work of the party’s scientific bureau, NGPF. Politics should be more about the power of the idea and less about the idea of power, Niko said.

Political scientist and author of De Voedselparadox (the food paradox) Herman Lelieveldt was a guest speaker at the congress. He talked about how politicians pass on all responsibility for food that is friendly to the environment, people and animals, to consumers, even though consumers cannot possibly compete with the powerful and massive companies. Instead of using national regulations to support major polluters, we should deploy these regulations to protect our planet and all its inhabitants.

I concluded the congress with a speech in which I announced that at the start of 2019, we will launch a new documentary on the consumption of animal products as the leading cause of many major problems. But it will also offer solutions to these problems. In 2007, our documentary Meat the Truth already caused quite a stir in the political sphere and the agricultural sector. The facts presented in the documentary about the devastating effects of the agricultural system on our planet were met with disbelief.

Today, these facts are common knowledge and even an important advisory council for the government is calling for a radical change in farming policy. With our new documentary, we want to show the world that the problems caused by the meat and dairy industry have only increased since 2007. The livestock lobby is one of the most powerful lobby groups in the world and it is only trying to increase its influence on the existing system. You can count on us to not shy away from uncomfortable truths in our new documentary. The conclusions will be at least as shocking as those in our last documentary.

There is a great need for change, and this change needs to come from the bottom up, from advocates such as the Party for the Animals. And it has already begun. Since 2006, the number of vegans in England have increased by 350%. Vegan food has become fashionable. We are part of a major social movement, a movement that is on the winning side. A movement with radical criticism of our current system, but which also provides real sustainable solutions. We raise awareness of a new, higher interest that is planet-wide and transcends the divisions of gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age and social class.

Between 20 and 24 June, delegations of our sister parties from all over the world – from Australia to Canada – will travel to Brussels and The Hague. Some organisations from e.g. Morocco and Turkey will also be present. Together, we will discuss how to address the issues in the livestock industry, live transports and all those other atrocities. On 22 June, I will give a lecture as part of this meeting at Leiden University in The Hague. The lecture is free of charge and open to the public, but the number of tickets still available is limited. You can book your tickets here. A great success for our European group: a majority of the European Parliament has supported the Party for the Animals’ proposal to stop subsidising bullfighting via the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). It is estimated that currently, millions of euros end up with breeders of fighting bulls each year.

Lastly, a success in the Dutch parliament: thanks to a widely supported motion of the Party for the Animals, the government must show how it endeavours to eliminate palm oil as a fuel. The Netherlands is Europe’s largest importer of palm oil and this has to stop. After all, the production of palm oil involves widespread destruction of habitats, rainforests and bogs. An area of rainforest the size of a million football pitches is cleared each year to produce palm oil, causing the orangutan and Sumatran tiger to be at significant risk of extinction. We will do everything in our power to halt the import of palm oil as soon as possible.

Unser wundervoller Parteikongress ist vorbei! Auf diesem Kongress wurde die Liste der Kandidaten für die Kommunalwahlen in der niederländischen Gemeinde Groningen erstellt. Senator und Parteigründer Niko Koffeman sprach über die Arbeit des NGPF, des wissenschaftlichen Büros der Partei für die Tiere. Die Politik muss mehr von der Macht der Idee handeln, als von der Idee der Macht, sagte Niko.

Herman Lelieveldt, Politikwissenschaftler und Autor des Buches The Food Paradox, war Gastredner des Kongresses. Er erklärte, wie die Politik alle Verantwortung für umwelt, menschen- und tierfreundliche Lebensmittel auf den Verbraucher verlagert, während der Verbraucher nicht mit den mächtigen Grossfirmen konkurrieren kann. Gesetzgebung sollte nicht dazu dienen, die größten Umweltverschmutzer am Laufen zu halten, sondern um unseren Planeten und seine Bewohner zu schützen.

Kongress der Partei für die Tiere

Ich habe den Kongress mit einer Rede abgeschlossen. Darin habe ich angekündigt, Anfang 2019 einen neuen Dokumentarfilm über den Verzehr tierischer Produkte als Ursache vieler großer Probleme, aber auch über die Lösungen dieser Probleme, zu veröffentlichen. Im Jahr 2007 sorgte unser Dokumentarfilm „Meat the Truth“ für viel Aufsehen in der Politik und im Agrarsektor. Die Fakten, die wir in diesem Dokumentarfilm über die katastrophalen Auswirkungen unseres Agrarsystems auf den Planeten vorstellten, wurden damals ungläubig aufgenommen.

Inzwischen sind diese Tatsachen allgemein bekannt, und sogar ein wichtiger Beirat der Regierung ruft zur Bekämpfung der Viehwirtschaft auf. In der neuen Dokumentation wollen wir zeigen, dass die Probleme der Fleisch- und Milchindustrie seit 2007 nicht kleiner, sondern größer geworden sind. Die Lobby der Fleischindustrie ist eine der mächtigsten in der Welt und versucht jetzt mehr den je zuvor, das bestehende System aufrecht zu erhalten. Seien Sie versichert, dass wir in unserem neuen Dokumentarfilm nicht zurückschrecken werden. Die Schlussfolgerungen dieses Films werden mindestens so spektakulär sein, wie die unseres vorherigen Dokumentarfilms

Dokumentation Meat the Truth

Veränderung ist mehr als notwendig. Es muss von unten kommen und von Vorreitern wie der Party für die Tiere. Und diese Veränderung liegt in der Luft. Seit 2006 ist die Zahl der Veganer in England um 350% gestiegen. Gemüseessen wird hip. Wir sind Teil einer großen sozialen Bewegung, die immer mehr Terrain gewinnt. Eine Bewegung mit radikaler, systematischer Kritik, aber auch eine Bewegung, die echte, nachhaltige Lösungen bietet. Wir weisen auf ein neues übergreifendes, weltumspannendes Interesse hin, das die Grenzen zwischen Geschlecht, ethnischer Zugehörigkeit, Glauben, sexueller Präferenz, Alter und Klasse überschreitet.

Zwischen dem 20. und 24. Juni werden wir Delegationen aus Brüssel und Den Haag von unseren Schwesterparteien aus der ganzen Welt empfangen: von Australien bis Kanada. Darüber hinaus werden einige Organisationen aus Marokko und der Türkei anwesend sein. Gemeinsam werden wir untersuchen, wie wir den Kampf gegen die Viehwirtschaft, den Tiertransport und all diese anderen Gräueltaten angehen können. Im Rahmen dieses Treffens werde ich am 22. Juni an der Universität Leiden, Campus Den Haag, einen Vortrag halten. Der Vortrag ist für alle kostenlos, aber es sind nur wenige Tickets verfügbar. Sie können sie hier noch reservieren. Da wir auch internationale Gäste haben, wird mein Vortrag auf Englisch sein. Ich hoffe, wir sehen uns am 22.!

Ein schöner Erfolg unserer europäischen Gruppe. Eine Mehrheit des Europäischen Parlaments hat einen Vorschlag der Partei für die Tiere unterstützt, die Agrarregelungen der Europäischen Union (EU) so zu ändern, dass kein Subventionsgeld mehr in den Stierkampf fliesst. Es wird geschätzt, dass jährlich Millionen Euro an EU-Subventionen für die Zucht von Kampfstieren gezahlt werden

Abschließend noch ein Erfolg im niederländischen Parlament: Dank vielfältiger Unterstützung wird die niederländische Regierung gezwungen, zu zeigen, wie sie auf einen Antrag der Partei für die Tiere gegen Palmöl als Treibstoff vorgeht. Die Niederlande sind der größte Importeur von Palmöl in Europa und das muss aufhören. Die Produktion von Palmöl verursacht großflächige Verwüstungen von Gebieten, Regenwäldern und Torfmooren. Für Palmöl werden eine Million Fußballfelder pro Jahr Regenwald abgeholzt. Infolgedessen sind der Orang-Utan und der Sumatra-Tiger ernsthaft vom Aussterben bedroht. Wir werden alles tun, um den Import von Palmöl so schnell wie möglich zu stoppen.
