Europa debe dejar de importar la hormona de la fertilidad Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin (PMSG) y prohibir su uso. “A los caballos en America del Sur en las granjas de sangre se les roba estando vivos su sangre. Esto hace que el uso de esta hormona esta en conflicto con la ley europea“, dice el Partido para los Animales. La Europarlamentaria Europea Anja Hazekamp planteo el problema ante la Comisión Europea.

PMSG, una hormona proveniente de la sangre de yeguas embarazadas es utilizada en la industria ganadera de Holanda y Alemania para hacer que los animales sean más fértiles. Para obtener la hormona las granjas de sangre en Argentina y Uruguay sacan grandes cantidades de sangre de yeguas embarazadas. La organizion Eyes on Animals constato recientemente abusos significativos. Así potros nacidos prematuramente de las yeguas de sangre son abortados prematuramente o matados pellizcados. Las madres adelgazan mucho y se debilitan por las grandes perdidas de sangre.

Debido a que las granjas de sangre no están permitidos en Europa, PMSG se importa; incluyendo por dos empresas holandesas. “Pero el uso en sí está en conflicto con la ley europea“, dijo la Europarlamentaria Anja Hazekamp. “Procedimientos de cría que causan dolor o lastiman a los animales no son permitidos en Europa. El uso de la PMSG para inseminar a los animales, no puede ser visto separado de los caballos que les quita estando vivos de su sangre para obtener esta hormona. Estas prácticas no se puede tolerar“, dijo Anja Hazekamp.

The use of this hormone is contrary to European legislation as a result,” according to the Party for the Animals. MEP Anja Hazekamp has raised the issue with the European Commission.

PMSG, a hormone made of the blood of pregnant mares, is used in the Dutch and German livestock industry to improve the reproduction of animals. To produce the hormone, the so-called ‘blood farms’ in Argentina and Uruguay systematically extract large volumes of blood from pregnant mares. Animal welfare foundation Eyes on Animals recently found major abuses in this industry. For example, unborn foils of blood horses are prematurely aborted or are squeezed to death. The mother horses become very thin and grow weak because of excessive blood extraction.

PMSG is imported because blood farms are not permitted in Europe; two Dutch companies among others conduct this import. “But also the use in itself is in conflict with European legislation,” according to MEP Anja Hazakamp. “Breeding methods that hurt or injure the animals involved are not permitted in Europe. The use of PMSG to fertilise animals cannot be disassociated from the blood extraction from live horses to produce this hormone. This type of practice is just not acceptable,” according to Anja Hazekamp.
