Miles de personas alrededor del mundo salieron el sábado 29 de abril a las calles para llamar la atención sobre el cambio climático. En Ámsterdam participo también en la Marcha el Partido para los Animales. Con el lema ‘menos carne, menos calor’ llamamos la atención hacia los efectos destructivos de la industria ganadera sobre el clima. Es que el sector ganadero emite más gases de efecto invernadero que todos los coches, camiones, trenes, barcos y aviones juntos. Además, para la producción de una onza de carne de res se necesitan 1.500 litros de agua. Traducido, esto significa que con no comer carne durante un día se ahorrará la misma cantidad de agua como que si no se duchara por un mes completo!

A pesar de estos hechos científicamente justificados los legisladores aun no ven la suficiente necesidad y la urgencia de tener cantidades mas pequeñas de ganado. Al contrario. En los Países Bajos, el país con mas ganado del mundo en una superficie pequeña, los productores de las vacas lecheras tienen ahora 2,5 veces mas ganado que al inicie de los anos ochenta. Una escala así de grande no beneficia a nadie: ni al clima, ni a las vacas y tampoco a los agricultores. El Partido para los Animales quiere salir de este callejón sin salida y elegir el camino de la agricultura orgánica en pequeña escala, de la agricultura mas favorable para los animales y la agricultura biológica con más enfoque en la producción de alternativas mas vegetales.

En uno de mis blogs anteriores dije que nuestra Eurodiputada Anja Hazekamp se iría para Malta junto con BirdLife Malta para documentar la caza de primavera de codornices y otras aves (tirón). Allí desde el primer día encontró todo tipo de actividades ilegales como el uso de depredadores de aves electrónicos que están prohibidos en el campo de caza. Estos abusos vienen encima del hecho de que este prohibida por la Directiva de Aves Europeos la caza de aves migratorias viajando hacia sus lugares para hacer sus nidos. Anja suplico al gobierno Maltes que prohibiera la caza de primavera de las aves migratorias. En Bruselas, junto a otros nueve diputados al Parlamento Europeo, hizo preguntas sobre la caza ilegal en Malta y ha llamado a la acción de la Comisión Europea.

También en Holanda, nuestro partido ha planteado cuestiones acerca de la caza. Nosotros hemos solicitado una prohibición de la caza en áreas naturales durante la época de cría, ya que las actividades de los cazadores durante tales meses hacen mucho mas daño a la naturaleza.

Hablando sobre la caza… Desde los Estados Unidos nos ha llegado la mala noticia que Trump ha retirado las restricciones introducidas por Obama en la caza de grandes depredadores en Alaska, por lo que los lobos y los osos han sido declarados libres para la matanza. Una prueba mas que se necesita una protesta muy fuerte. Por esta razón estoy tan satisfecha con el crecimiento de nuestro movimiento alrededor del mundo y la creciente conciencia entre la población en todo el mundo. Fue alentador ver que justo en Washington la Marcha por el Clima atrajo a muchas decenas de miles de estadounidenses. Alentador, pero al mismo tiempo preocupante. O como dijo el fotógrafo americano y activista de Ansel Adams, “es espantoso que tenemos que luchar contra nuestro propio gobierno para salvar el medio ambiente’.

Felizmente habian tambien noticias positivas desde los Estados Unidos. Los Angeles va a prohibir el uso de animales salvajes para el entrenamiento. Esto significa un fin de los circos, fiestas y otros eventos con animales salvajes. El país de Guatemala ya el mes pasado ha tomado el mismo paso positivo!

On Saturday the 29th of April, thousands of people from all over the world went to march to ask for attention for climate change. In Amsterdam, the Party for the Animals also participated in this People’s Climate March. With the slogan ‘Less Meat, Less Heat’ we drew attention to the livestock industry’s destructive effects on the climate. As a matter of fact, livestock farming emits more greenhouse gases than all cars, lorries, trains, boats and planes together. In addition, the production of 1 ounce of beef requires no less than 1,500 litres of water. When converted, it means that by not eating meat for one day you can save as much water as an entire month’s worth of showers.

Despite these scientific based facts, policy makers still do not realise enough how essential and urgent it is to decrease the livestock industry. On the contrary, in the Netherlands – the country with the densest livestock population in the world – dairy farmers are now keeping 2.5 times as many cows as they did at the start of the eighties. No one benefits from this growth in scale: not the climate, not the cows, nor the farmers. The Party for the Animals wants to leave this dead-end road and choose the path of small scale, animal-friendly and organic agriculture and focus more on the production of vegetal alternatives.

In one of my previous blogs, I told you that our MEP Anja Hazekamp was going to Malta together with BirdLife to shed a light on the spring hunting of quails and other (migratory) birds. Already on the first day they encountered different illegal activities, such as the use of forbidden electronic bird decoys on the hunting grounds. These malpractices are in addition to the fact that the hunting of migratory birds, which are travelling to their breeding grounds, is in any case prohibited by the European Birds Directive. Anja asked the Maltese government to stop the spring hunting of migratory birds. Back in Brussels, she, together with nine colleague MEPs, asked questions about the illegal hunting on Malta and urged the European Commission to take action .

Our group in the Netherlands also asked questions about hunting. We pleaded for a hunting ban in nature conservation areas during the breeding season, given that the activities of hunters disrupt nature even more during these months.

Speaking of hunting… We received bad news from the US saying that Trump has repealed Obama’s hunting restrictions on national wildlife refuges in Alaska, as a result of which wolves and bears are now declared an outlaw. Proof again that a powerful opposing view is needed. That is why I am so happy with the growth of our movement all across the world and the growing awareness among the population worldwide. It was encouraging to see that in Washington, of all places, the Climate March was attended by many tens of thousands concerned Americans. Encouraging, but at the same time dubious. Or like the American photographer and activist Ansel Adams said: ‘It is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the environment.’

Luckily there was also good news from the US. Los Angeles is going to ban the use of wild animals for entertainment purposes. This means an end to circuses, feasts and other events with wild animals. Guatemala also took this great step last month!
