We have had another wonderful party congress! At this congress, the list of candidates for the municipal elections in the Dutch municipality of Groningen was established. Niko Koffeman, senator and founder of the Party for the Animals, discussed the work of the party’s scientific bureau, NGPF. Politics should be more about the power of the idea and less about the idea of power, Niko said.
Political scientist and author of De Voedselparadox (the food paradox) Herman Lelieveldt was a guest speaker at the congress. He talked about how politicians pass on all responsibility for food that is friendly to the environment, people and animals, to consumers, even though consumers cannot possibly compete with the powerful and massive companies. Instead of using national regulations to support major polluters, we should deploy these regulations to protect our planet and all its inhabitants.
Party for the Animals Congress
I concluded the congress with a speech in which I announced that at the start of 2019, we will launch a new documentary on the consumption of animal products as the leading cause of many major problems. But it will also offer solutions to these problems. In 2007, our documentary Meat the Truth already caused quite a stir in the political sphere and the agricultural sector. The facts presented in the documentary about the devastating effects of the agricultural system on our planet were met with disbelief.
Today, these facts are common knowledge and even an important advisory council for the government is calling for a radical change in farming policy. With our new documentary, we want to show the world that the problems caused by the meat and dairy industry have only increased since 2007. The livestock lobby is one of the most powerful lobby groups in the world and it is only trying to increase its influence on the existing system. You can count on us to not shy away from uncomfortable truths in our new documentary. The conclusions will be at least as shocking as those in our last documentary.
Meat the Truth documentary
There is a great need for change, and this change needs to come from the bottom up, from advocates such as the Party for the Animals. And it has already begun. Since 2006, the number of vegans in England have increased by 350%. Vegan food has become fashionable. We are part of a major social movement, a movement that is on the winning side. A movement with radical criticism of our current system, but which also provides real sustainable solutions. We raise awareness of a new, higher interest that is planet-wide and transcends the divisions of gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age and social class.
Between 20 and 24 June, delegations of our sister parties from all over the world – from Australia to Canada – will travel to Brussels and The Hague. Some organisations from e.g. Morocco and Turkey will also be present. Together, we will discuss how to address the issues in the livestock industry, live transports and all those other atrocities. On 22 June, I will give a lecture as part of this meeting at Leiden University in The Hague. The lecture is free of charge and open to the public, but the number of tickets still available is limited. You can book your tickets here. A great success for our European group: a majority of the European Parliament has supported the Party for the Animals’ proposal to stop subsidising bullfighting via the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). It is estimated that currently, millions of euros end up with breeders of fighting bulls each year.
Lastly, a success in the Dutch parliament: thanks to a widely supported motion of the Party for the Animals, the government must show how it endeavours to eliminate palm oil as a fuel. The Netherlands is Europe’s largest importer of palm oil and this has to stop. After all, the production of palm oil involves widespread destruction of habitats, rainforests and bogs. An area of rainforest the size of a million football pitches is cleared each year to produce palm oil, causing the orangutan and Sumatran tiger to be at significant risk of extinction. We will do everything in our power to halt the import of palm oil as soon as possible.

Hemos tenido con nuestro partido un exitoso congreso! En este congreso, se ha decidido por la lista de candidatos para las elecciones municipales en el municipio holandés de Groningen. El senador y fundador del partido, Niko Koffeman, habló sobre el trabajo del NGPF, la oficina científica del Partido para los Animales. La política debe enfocarse más sobre el poder de la idea, en lugar de la idea de poder, mostró Niko.
Herman Lelieveldt, politólogo y autor del libro The Food Paradox, fue el orador invitado en el congreso. Explicó cómo la política transfiere toda la responsabilidad de los alimentos ecológicos, humanos y animales al consumidor, mientras que el consumidor no pueda competir con las poderosas y monstruosas empresas. No tenemos que usar las reglas existentes para mantener en funcionamiento a los grandes contaminadores, sino proteger nuestro planeta y todos sus habitantes.
Congreso del Partido para los Animales
Cerré el congreso con un discurso. En él anuncié que publicaremos un nuevo documental a principios de 2019 sobre el consumo de productos animal como la causa de muchos problemas importantes. Pero también sera un documental sobre las soluciones a esos problemas. En 2007, nuestro documental Meat the Truth causó mucha sensación en la política y en el sector agrícola. Los hechos que presentamos en ese documental sobre los efectos desastrosos de nuestro sistema agrícola sobre el planeta fueron recibidos con mucha incredulidad.
Mientras tanto, estos hechos son generalmente conocidos e incluso una importante junta asesora del gobierno está pidiendo que se aborde la industria ganadera. En el nuevo documental queremos mostrar que los problemas causados por la industria cárnica y láctea desde 2007 no se han reducido, sino que han aumentado. El lobby de la industria ganadera es uno de los más poderosos del mundo y ahora solo intenta aferrarse aun mas al sistema existente. Pueden estar seguros que en el nuevo documental no nos corremos de las inquietudes. Las conclusiones de esa película serán al menos tan espectaculares como las de nuestro documental anterior.
Documental Meat the Truth
Los cambios son muy necesarios. Tienen que venir desde abajo y de luchadores como lo somos el Partido para los Animales. Y ese cambio esta por llegar. Desde 2006, el número de veganos en Inglaterra ha aumentado con un 350%. Comer alimentos vegetales se esta poniendo muy popular. Formamos parte de un gran movimiento social que se esta volviendo muy exitoso. Un movimiento con una crítica radical al sistema, pero también un movimiento que ofrece soluciones reales y sostenibles. Señalamos un nuevo interés general en todo el planeta que trasciende las líneas divisorias de género, etnia, fe, preferencia sexual, edad y clase.
Entre el 20 y el 24 de junio, recibiremos en Bruselas y La Haya delegaciones de nuestros partidos hermanos de todo el mundo: desde Australia a Canadá. Además, algunas organizaciones de entre otros Marruecos y Turquía estarán presentes. Juntos veremos cómo podemos enfrentar la batalla contra la industria ganadera, los transportes de animales y de todas esas otras atrocidades. Como parte de esta reunión, daré una conferencia en la Universidad de Leiden, Campus La Haya, el 22 de junio. La conferencia es gratuita para todos, pero solo hay algunas entradas disponibles. Un buen éxito logrado por nuestra fracción europea. Una mayoría del Parlamento Europeo ha apoyado una propuesta presentada por el Partido para los Animales para enmendar las normas agrícolas de la Unión Europea (UE) de forma tal que ningún dinero de subsidios termine en las corridas de toros. Se estima que en la actualidad se pagan millones de euros de subsidios de la UE a la cría de los toros de lidia.
Finalmente, logramos un éxito mas en el parlamento holandés: gracias a una moción ampliamente apoyada presentada por el Partido para los Animales, el gobierno debe mostrar que esfuerzos hace contra el aceite de palma como combustible. Los Países Bajos son los mayor importadores de aceite de palma en Europa y eso tiene que parar. La producción de aceite de palma causa la deforestación a gran escala de áreas, bosques lluviosos, pantanos de turba. Para el aceite de palma, se talan un millón de campos de fútbol por año de selva tropical. Como resultado, el orangután y el tigre de Sumatra están siendo seriamente amenazados de extinción. Haremos todo lo posible para detener la importación de aceite de palma lo más rápido posible.
