Une très grande percée! Avec pas moins de 33 sièges dans les conseils municipaux, nous avons connu une croissance spectaculaire lors des élections municipales du 21 mars. Le nombre de sièges que nous occupons dans les conseils municipaux, a ainsi presque triplé. Nous avons célébré cela avec un gâteau végétalien et du champagne au sein de notre groupe. De plus en plus d’électeurs veulent la fin de l’âge de la pierre et de la dégénération écologique à grande échelle. Nous serons l’ancre verte dans toutes les municipalités où nous avons participé, que ce soit dans l’opposition ou dans la coalition. Un grand merci aux électeurs, à l’équipe de campagne, tous les membres actifs et supporters dans le monde entier!

En mars il y a également eu des élections en Australie, dans l’État d’Australie-Méridionale, où l’on devait diviser un total de 58 sièges. Notre parti-frère Animal Justice Party (AJP) y a participé pour la première fois et a remporté des milliers de votes, mais malheureusement pas assez pour gagner un siège. Le système électoral australien rend l’obtention d’un siège difficile pour les petits partis. Le résultat électoral d’AJP montre cependant que le parti est un facteur politique sérieux que les autres partis devront prendre en compte. Le résultat montre en plus que de plus en plus d’Australiens souhaitent vivre dans une société guidée par la compassion, la durabilité et le respect pour tous les êtres vivants. Félicitations, AJP et les Australiens!

Le 16 mars, j’ai présenté un nouveau projet de loi concernant l’obligation générale d’anesthésier les animaux avant l’abattage. Aux Pays-Bas, il existe déjà une obligation légale d’anesthésier les animaux avant qu’ils ne soient abattus, mais l’on a fait une exception pour l’abattage halal et casher. Nous voulons supprimer cette exception. L’abattage sans étourdissement des animaux entraîne une souffrance animale inacceptable. Bien que chaque croyant ait le droit de croire à sa propre vérité religieuse comme il le souhaite, cela ne donne pas le droit de violer les convictions des autres ou de porter atteinte au bien-être des humains ou des animaux. Pour un animal, la croyance de son abatteur ne devrait pas faire de différence. En attendant, nous continuerons bien sûr à nous battre contre toute la bio-industrie!
Les gens pensent parfois que le bien-être des animaux est bien réglementé aux Pays-Bas. La semaine dernière, les inspecteurs de l’Autorité néerlandaise pour l’Alimentation et les Biens de consommation (NVWA) ont constaté que les exploitations avicoles enfreignent souvent intentionnellement les règles du bien-être animal et de la sécurité alimentaire. Trop souvent encore, par exemple, les animaux ne reçoivent pas assez d’aliments et d’eau potable. Il est grand temps que le Ministre de l’Agriculture s’y attaque sérieusement. Nous avons déjà posé des questions à ce sujet dans la Chambre des Représentants.

Des nouvelles de la part de notre groupe européen: notre députée européenne Anja Hazekamp a pris la tête de la lutte contre la chasse aux oiseaux migrateurs à Malte. Avec d’autres membres du Parlement Européen (PE) de différents groupes politiques, elle a appelé la Commission Européenne à entamer une procédure d’infraction contre Malte afin de mettre fin à la chasse printanière. Lors de sa visite à Malte l’année dernière, Anja a elle-même été témoin de diverses activités de chasse illégales. Anja a également demandé un débat au PE sur cette question.

Pour terminer encore une chouette nouvelle: le 14 avril je rendrai visite à notre parti-frère suédois Djurens Parti pour les aider à préparer les élections suédoises. Je vais aussi donner une conférence le samedi soir à Stockholm sur l’importance de notre mouvement politique grandissant pour les animaux, les gens et l’environnement. La conférence est publique, invitez-y donc tous vos amis et connaissances suédois et si vous êtes vous-même dans les environs de Stockholm, venez surtout écouter! Great breakthrough! With no less than 33 seats in municipal councils, we made a spectacular growth at the municipal elections of 21 March last. Our number of seats in the municipal councils almost trebled. We celebrated this in our party’s room with vegan cake and campaign. Increasingly more voters want to end the stone age and the large-scale de-greening. We will be the green anchor in all municipalities where we participated, in the opposition or in a coalition. Voters, campaign team, all active members and supporters all over the world: Thanks!

In March, there were also elections in Australia in the State of South Australia where there were 58 seats in total to be divided. Our sister party Animal Justice Party (AJP) participated in these elections for the first time and won thousands of votes but unfortunately not enough for a seat. The Australian voting system makes it hard for small parties to gain a seat. With this election result, however, AJP has shown that it is a serious political factor which other parties must consider. The result shows that increasingly more Australians want a society that is led by compassion, sustainability, and respect for all living creatures! Congratulations, AJP and Australians!

On the 16th of March, I submitted a new legislative proposal for a general obligation to stun all animals before they are slaughtered. In the Netherlands there already is a statutory obligation to stun animals before they are slaughtered, but an exception is made for halal and kosher slaughter. We want to cancel that exception. The mutandis slaughter of animals leads to unacceptable animal suffering. Although every religious person has the right to live his religious truth the way he wants to, it does not give him the right to infringe other beliefs or the welfare of humans or animals. The religion of the slaughter should not make a difference for an animal. But meanwhile we will of course continue to fight against factory farming as a whole!
People sometimes think that everything is organised well where it concerns animal welfare. Last week, the supervisor of the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) found that poultry farms often deliberately violate animal welfare and food safety regulations . It still happens too often that animals, for example, have too little food and drinking water. It is high time that the Minister of Agriculture starts to tackle this seriously. We have already asked questions in the Lower House.

News from our European political party. Our MEP Anja Hazekamp has taken the lead in the fight against the hunting of migratory birds on Malta. Together with other members of the European Parliament (EP) of several political groups, she called upon the European Commission to start infringement proceedings against Malta and to put a stop to the spring hunting. During her visit to Malta last year, Anja witnessed several illegal hunting activities herself. Anja also requested a debate in the EP about this issue.

Finally, some nice news: On the 14th of April, I am going to visit our Swedish sister party Djurens Parti to help them with the preparations for the Swedish elections. I will also give a lecture that Saturday night in Stockholm about the importance of our growing political movement for animals, people and the environment.
