De campagne voor de Nederlandse gemeenteraadsverkiezingen op 21 maart is nu echt in volle gang. Wij doen mee in 15 gemeenten en overal zetten onze leden zich onvermoeibaar in om zoveel mogelijk mensen te betrekken bij de strijd voor onze planeet en ál haar inwoners. Komende weken geef ik een aantal lezingen in het land samen met financieel geograaf Ewald Engelen. Wij hebben samen vorig jaar het boek “Kanarie in de Kolenmijn” geschreven, een boek over de onhoudbaarheid van de huidige politieke en financiële keuzes en over de noodzaak van een radicale koerswijziging. Het boek is ook beschikbaar in het Engels.

Samen met duizenden andere Nederlanders hebben we deze maand twee rebelse koeien van de slacht kunnen redden. De koeien, Hermien en Zus, ontsnapten net voordat ze naar het slachthuis zouden gaan. Koe Zus werd al snel gevangen, maar Hermien bleef zich weken in de bossen verstoppen. Omdat deze koeien een prachtig symbool zijn voor de drang naar vrijheid bij dieren, hadden we een crowdfundingactie opgestart, waarbij we hoopten in ieder geval Hermien een mooi leven te kunnen geven in een koeienrusthuis. De actie was zo succesvol dat we niet alleen Hermien, maar ook haar maatje Zus hebben kunnen overplaatsen naar het rusthuis, waar ze de rest van hun leven goed zullen worden verzorgd. We hopen dat in de toekomst geen enkel dier meer hoeft te rennen voor zijn leven als ze in contact komen met mensen.

In mijn vorige Worldlog zei ik dat het Europees Parlement een speciale commissie gaat instellen om onderzoek te doen naar de belangenconflicten die gespeeld hebben bij het verlengen van de EU-licentie voor het omstreden landbouwgif glyfosaat. Onze Europarlementariër Anja Hazekamp was een van de initiatiefnemers van de onderzoekscommissie en inmiddels is bekend dat zij zitting zal nemen in deze commissie. We zijn blij met Anja in de commissie, want ze is vastbesloten om de onderste steen naar boven te halen!

We hebben goed nieuws uit België: gisteren werd onze Belgische zusterpartij “DierAnimal” tijdens een drukbezochte persconferentie gelanceerd. Fantastisch dat we er nog een partner bij hebben gekregen in onze internationale strijd voor een leefbare planeet.

Leonardo DiCaprio spreekt over klimaatverandering

Vorige week was ik aanwezig bij een Nederlands event voor goede doelen, waar Leonardo DiCaprio een speech gaf. De acteur zet zich met zijn Leonardo DiCaprio Stichting in voor een beter klimaat. DiCaprio wees in zijn speech ook op de vis- en vleesindustrie, die desastreus is voor onze planeet, mens en dier. Net zoals Partij voor de Dieren vindt hij dat we te lang hebben gewacht om de gevolgen van het opwarmen van de aarde aan te pakken en dat we nú alles op alles moeten zetten om de aarde leefbaar te houden.

Ter afsluiting: The New York Times schreef een mooi artikel over de Nederlandse Dierenpolitie, waarvoor ik geïnterviewd werd. Daarin pleit ik voor een dierenpolitie met meer bevoegdheden, waaronder het helpen van de miljoenen dieren in de vee-industrie. Ook Japanse journalisten zijn geïnteresseerd in onze partij: ik gaf onlangs een interview aan The Asahi Shimbun, met een oplage van acht miljoen de op één na grootste krant van Japan. Ze waren erg geïnteresseerd in de Partij voor de Dieren en het thema onverdoofd slachten. Op naar een Japanse PvdD!

The campaign for the Dutch municipal elections on the 21st of March is in full swing now. We participate in 15 municipalities and our members are making inexhaustible efforts to involve as many people as possible in the fight for our planet and all its inhabitants. Over the next few weeks, I will give several lectures throughout the country together with the financial geographer Ewald Engelen. Last year, we jointly wrote the book “The Canary in the Coal Mine”, a book about the untenability of the current political and financial choices and about the necessity for a radical change of course. The book is also available in English.

Together with thousands of other Dutch people we managed to save two rebel cows from slaughter. The cows, Hermien and Zus, escaped just before they were to be transported to the slaughterhouse. Cow Zus was captured quickly but Hermien kept hiding in the forests for weeks. Because these cows are a great symbol for the urge for animal freedom, we had set up a crowdfunding action hoping to raise money to give at least Hermien a beautiful life in a cow rest house. This action was so successful that we did not only manage to bring Hermien to the resthouse but also her mate Zus. They will be looked after in the resthouse for the rest of their lives. We hope that in the future no animal at all will have to run for its life when they come in contact with people.

In my previous Worldlog I told you that the European Parliament is going to set up a special committee to carry out an investigation into the conflicts of interests that arose when the EU licence for the controversial agriculture pesticide had to be extended. Our MEP Anja Hazekamp was one of the initiators of the investigation committee and it has meanwhile become known that she will become a member of the committee in question. We are pleased that Anja will be a member of the committee because she is determined to get to the bottom of this.

We have received good news from Belgium: yesterday our Belgian sister party “DierAnimal” was launched during a busy press conference. It’s great that we have gained another partner in our international fight for a liveable planet.

Leonardo DiCaprio talks about climate change

Last week, I attended a Dutch event for good causes, at which Leonardo DiCaprio gave a lecture. The actor is working to get a better climate with his Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. In his speech, DiCaprio also addressed the fish and meat industry, which is disastrous for our planet, humans and animals. Like the Party for the Animals, he believes that we have waited too long to tackle the consequences of global warming and that we now have to give out all to maintain the earth liveable.

In conclusion: The New York Times wrote a nice article about the Dutch Animal Police, for which I was interviewed. In this interview, I pleaded for an animal police with more authority, including helping millions of animals in the livestock industry. Japanese journalists are also interested in our party: I recently gave an interview to The Asahi Shimbum, the second biggest newspaper in Japan with a circulation of eight million. They were very interested in the Party for the Animals and the topic of unstunned slaughter. Go for a Japanese PftA!
